In today’s demanding and fast pace business landscape employers are tasked with pushing the limits of efficiency and doing more with less. On the receiving end of these demands are employees who worried about becoming unemployed are overworking themselves and reducing their productivity as a result and costing the company more money in the long run.
The Problem in Today’s Workplace
With the rising number of absent employees and accidents occurring in today’s workplace, it’s time to pay attention to the startling fact that exhaustion is a very serious and real problem that needs addressing.
According to the latest findings from the National Safety Council, 13 percent of all workplace injuries are the result of fatigue. Another 16 percent of survey respondents also reported at least one safety incident due to fatigue.
When someone is experiencing extreme tiredness they have the reduced ability to make sound decisions and may lack the strength needed to perform job tasks.
Environmental conditions can also lead to fatigue. Pay attention to work conditions, heat and any compliance requirements for keeping your workplace safe and comfortable for workers.
So how do you confront this issue while keeping operations productive and efficient?
Employers must take work and rest time seriously to reduce the risk of injuries at their operations. Careful scheduling and shift planning means not allowing someone to work a night shift immediately after they have worked a day shift, allowing for more break time and rooms dedicated to resting as well as promoting a culture of appreciation and rewarding positive behaviors rather than reducing confidence in workers who are honest enough to admit when they are too tired to safely perform the job at hand.
Be sure to incorporate safety talks that discuss fatigue in employee training sessions as well as posters with reminders when needed around the workplace. Keeping your workplace fully stocked with water to hydrate and a first aid cabinet filled with supplies needed to immediately address injuries should they occur is also critical.
