OSHA Enforcing Occupational Exposure to Beryllium Standard

Keeping up with OSHA standards isn’t only important for compliance, it also protects workplaces and their employees from injuries and other harmful risks. To ensure workers remain safe, OSHA is always reviewing and revising standards to increase efficiency.

We are now less than 10 days away from the official start of OSHA’s enforcement on the exposure to beryllium in general, construction, and shipyard industries.

The official start date of May 11, 2018 means businesses need their operations to be in compliance or risk consequences.

The New Breyllium Standard

The final rule is an updated standard that helps clarify and simplify requirements. Mainly it lowers the permissible exposure limit (PEL) to just eight hours of 0.2 micrograms per cubic meter and a new short-term exposure limit (STEL) of 15-minutes (2.0 micrograms per cubic meter).

Beryllium is an earth metal that is known to be stronger than steel but lighter than aluminum. It’s also highly toxic when airborne. The material is used in industries ranging from aerospace to medical and defense industries. Exposure to the particle in the air can lead to lung cancer, acute Beryllium disease or even chronic Beryllium disease.

Another level of the standard will involve those industries that require changing rooms and showers and will have provisions for safety beginning March 11, 2019 in the general industry and March 10, 2020 for engineering controls.
